The continuing role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security was emphasised at a ceremony held at Tunbridge Wells town hall
Speakers at an event held at Tunbridge Wells Town Hall emphasised the key role that the United Nations continues to play in maintaining international peace and security.
Leakey Abdela OBE, Honorary President of the Tunbridge Wells and Wealden branch of the United Nations, said that the world was more precarious and uncertain than ever.
She stressed the importance of the role of women such as herself in UN peacekeeping and conflict resolution processes, many of which she had worked on over recent decades around the world.
in Kosovo, for example, she heard the words, “Welcome to Pristina, we don’t know if our mission will be historical or hysterical’, which aptly sums up the current chaotic global geopolitical situation.
Dr Mike Martin, Lib Dem MP for Tunbridge Wells echoed these words, but said the role of the UN as a key component of the framework of international relations was still crucial.
’The world is on fire, with the number of conflicts now greater than it has been for many decades’, Dr Martin said.
However, he also saw the role of women as crucial to the success of peace processes. ‘Peace treaties last longer if they have women involved, as you’re much less likely to see a return to conflict’.
‘it is the duty of all of us here at local level, and particularly people like me, to rebuild these international frameworks. Chief amongst them, the UN’, he concluded.
