A new scheme to better protect 2,400 local properties from flooding has opened on the River Medway
A new £42 million scheme has opened on the River Medway to boost flood protection for 1,870 homes and 575 businesses across the Tonbridge and Hildenborough area.
The upgraded Leigh Flood Storage Area and new Hildenborough embankment scheme has increased water storage capacity by around 23%.
By increasing the maximum stored water level at the control structure by 55 centimetres, the enhanced storage area can now hold about 7.4 million cubic metres of floodwater, equal to approximately 2,800 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The Leigh Storage Area was first opened in 1983 and has been deployed 75 times since then to reduce local flood risk.
