An 18 year old from Tunbridge Wells has run from Land's End to John o'Groats raising over £20,000
Freddie Skarbek, from Tunbridge Wells completed the challenge over 40 consecutive days, averaging more than a marathon every single day as he travelled the 1000+ mile route from Cornwall to the north of Scotland, covering the entire length of the UK.
He was inspired to take on the challenge through Young Lives vs Cancer’s long-term partnership with Wetherspoon, and wanted to push himself to raise vital funds for children and young people facing cancer.
Along the way, Freddie visited Young Lives vs Cancer’s Home from Home in Bristol, where he was able to see first-hand how the charity helps families stay together while a child receives cancer treatment far from home.
Freddie said: “It’s been a tough challenge but an extremely enjoyable experience – it’s been fun to see what a beautiful and varied country we live in, and I’ve met so many friendly and welcoming people along the way.
“It was great to see the Home from Home work in practice and to meet the team and understand the help they provide to young people and their families.”
From the moment of diagnosis, Young Lives vs Cancer’s specialist social workers provide day-to-day support for children, young people and their families. The charity also provides free accommodation close to hospitals through its Homes from Home, helping families stay together during treatment, and offers financial grants to help families cope with the significant extra costs cancer brings. The charity relies on donations to fund this vital work.
Carol Anne McMahon, Partnership Fundraiser at Young Lives vs Cancer, said: “Freddie’s achievement is nothing short of incredible. Running the entire length of the UK and averaging more than a marathon a day for 40 days is a phenomenal challenge, and we’re so grateful that he chose to do it in support of Young Lives vs Cancer.
“Thanks to Freddie and everyone who has supported him along the way, more children and young people with cancer – and their families – will be able to access the vital support they need during the toughest time of their lives.”
