Lizzie Penman-Green spoke to Chris Makey about her project and the dementia café based in Southborough.
Lizzie has worked within dementia care for many years and created Lizzie’s Helping Hearts after seeing first-hand just how isolating life can become, not only for the person living with dementia but also for the families and carers around them.
The café is about so much more than tea and coffee. It is a place where people can make friends, laugh, reminisce, take part in meaningful activities and feel part of a community again.
Since opening, people have described the café as their “lifeline” and said it gives them “a reason to get up in the mornings”.
Lizzie has recently made the decision to leave her employed role in dementia care so she can dedicate more of her time and energy to growing Lizzie’s Helping Hearts and supporting more local families. Her long-term dream is to develop the service further, including offering free rest and reprieve for families affected by dementia.
She was delighted to receive two awards at the Love Where We Live awards from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council.
