Working with professional composers and musicians

A Tonbridge Grammar School student took the opportunity

Megan in Year 12 attended the ‘Sound and Music Summer School’, a week-long summer school for young composers at The Purcell School (one of the oldest specialist music schools in the country).

Megan explains more about the experience:

There were six broad categories exploring different genres of music, but I was selected to take part in the Film Music group as I’m keen to learn more about composing for the moving image.  During the course, I was also able to learn how to compose for both jazz and cross-cultural music.

During the week, we worked with the help of professional composers and musicians to create our own compositions to a brief set by our tutor.  Using the school’s amazing facilities, every day was jam-packed with talks, workshops, tutorials and composition time as well as time to reflect upon the day and also play late into the night with other like-minded people.  We were still limited to bubbles but having the chance to collaborate with others was amazing!

I was given a brief to compose for a short extract from the Netflix series, ‘Unorthodox’, whilst others in my group were given horror, action and other genres to compose for.

At the end of the week, there was a concert and the musicians played our compositions to a live audience. It was an unforgettable experience and one that I was so grateful to take part in, especially when so many other musical events were cancelled due to Covid this Summer.

I’d highly recommend this course to any aspiring TGS composers!
