Volunteering

Volunteering at West Kent Radio

West Kent Radio is your local volunteer-led community radio station broadcasting to Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Southborough, and surrounding villages and towns.

The station is currently seeking new volunteers in the following areas only:

  • Journalists (Local News)
  • Journalists (Local Sport)
  • Technical Engineering
  • Marketing Support
  • Grant Finder (Fundraiser)
  • Daytime Presenters (experienced)
  • Presenters (non-experienced)

Journalists (Local News)

You will be part of our growing local news team, looking to bring stories to life for broadcast on-air. The team sources and writes local news stories and arranges interviews with those making the headlines. Interviews are made into news packages for broadcast and for the station website. We are looking to expand the team, to provide local news bulletins on a rota basis. Experience is useful but not essential and training is available.

Journalists (Local Sport)

Similar to local news, but majoring in sport across the area. You could be sourcing local sports stories, conducting interviews, and preparing sports packages for broadcast and the station website. The station is also increasingly using video for news reports. Experience is useful but not essential and training is available.

Technical Engineering

Our technical and IT teams are looking for new volunteers with either a technical/electrical background or experience in IT. This may include helping with the technical side of live outside broadcasts from various locations. We are unable to train from scratch in these areas.

Marketing Support

This is an important area for the station, where we need to promote who and what we are to the community. We are looking for individuals who can introduce us to the wider community and find new and interesting ways to spread the message that the community has it's own radio station. If you have marketing expertise, including social media experience, we would like to hear from you.

Grant Finder (Fundraiser)

We are currently seeking individuals with some fundraising experience who are able to help source funds via grant giving organisations and businesses. Complete the application and if successful manage the process to the final reporting. We are mainly looking for some additional core funding to help meet the increasing day to day costs of running the service, but also some project funding is needed.

Daytime Presenters

We are keen to add to our line up of presenters who are able to present live shows from our studios. So if you have had some previous experience, maybe in student radio, hospital radio, local and community radio, please get in touch. If you have previous experience using the Broadcast Radio system Myriad this would be ideal but desk and play out system training can be given to the right candidates. The role is voluntary as a member of West Kent Radio.

Non-Experienced Presenters

If you have not previously had experienced in broadcasting, but feel you would like to become a volunteer and be trained to present a show, along with some other activities to support the charity, you are also welcome to submit an application.

If the idea of volunteering with us appeals to you, you are aged 18 or over and live within 20 miles of our Southborough studio centre, please complete the form below and we will be in touch.

Please note: As a voluntary organisation, we are unable to offer work experience placements.
